What Actually is Structured Literacy?

structured literacy Feb 19, 2024

It's all over the media in Australia at the moment that our schools are failing to teach one third of kids how to read properly.

The reason?

Schools are using out dated, ineffective ways of teaching reading.

What do we need to do instead?

Teach using Structed Literacy approach - but what is that exactly?

Structured literacy is an evidence-based method of teaching reading and one that All Kids Can have been teaching since it became operational back in 2010. This is by no way new. Structured Literacy has been around for decades.

Structured Literacy focuses on teaching the foundational skills of reading systematically and explicitly. It encompasses phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension, providing a comprehensive framework for literacy development. Here's why it's so powerful:

Firstly, structured literacy instruction is systematic, meaning it follows a carefully planned sequence that ensures children master each skill before moving on to the next. This sequential approach builds a solid foundation for reading success, giving children the confidence and skills they need to progress.

Secondly, structured literacy instruction is explicit. Teachers provide clear explanations of language rules and patterns, breaking down complex concepts into manageable chunks. This clarity helps children understand the structure of language, making reading and spelling more accessible.

Moreover, structured literacy instruction incorporates multisensory techniques, engaging multiple senses to reinforce learning. By incorporating auditory, visual, and kinesthetic elements, children are better able to grasp and retain information, regardless of their learning style.

Finally, structured literacy instruction includes cumulative review, ensuring that previously learned skills are reinforced regularly. This ongoing practice helps children retain information and build fluency over time, preventing regression and solidifying their reading skills.

In contrast to approaches like balanced literacy or whole language, which lack systematic and explicit instruction in phonics, structured literacy provides a robust framework for reading instruction that is essential for children, especially those with dyslexia or other reading difficulties.

As parents, you play a crucial role in supporting your child's literacy development. By understanding the principles of structured literacy and advocating for evidence-based instruction, you can empower your child to overcome reading challenges and unlock their full potential.

It truly is the light at the end of the tunnel for kids struggling with reading.
