Let's look at the research

Why is structured literacy the gold standard?

Structured literacy is backed by decades of research into how the brain learns to read. It teaches reading and spelling in a clear, systematic way, helping children build strong foundational skills step by step.

The well-known UK Rose Report (2006) found that high-quality systematic phonics should be taught as the “prime approach” to learning to read and spell.

Unlike approaches that encourage guessing from pictures or memorising whole words, structured literacy teaches children how words actually work. Children learn to use the sounds and patterns within words so they can accurately read and spell unfamiliar words independently.

This is especially important for children with dyslexia, ADHD, autism, or those who have struggled with non-evidence-based reading instruction such as balanced literacy or whole language approaches.

At All Kids Can Education, we use evidence-based Orton-Gillingham and Multisensory Structured Language (MSL) instruction because both the research and our experience consistently show these approaches improve reading, spelling, and writing outcomes for struggling learners.

No guessing.
No memorising whole words.
Just accurate, explicit instruction that helps children become more confident readers.
